Inspired by a local textile exhibition and the Bayeux Tapestry, Royston Museum's Curator, Jane Vincent had the idea create a tapestry charting Royston’s historical events.
The first stitch was placed on 1st July 1993, however it wasn't completed until the end October 2018. For 30 years, people from the local area and beyond gave their time, skills and support to create a unique piece of work which is now part of the Museum’s collection.
Each scene on the Royston Tapestry tells the story of a key event in Royston’s history, from prehistoric times up to the discovery of Royston Cave in 1742. The tapestry measurers just over 25 metres long and over 75cm high. The original plan had been to continue up until the 20th century, but this would have been nearly 40 metres long! By 2018, most of the original embroiderers were no longer working on the tapestry and it was agreed that Royston Cave discovery would be the final scene.
